uildings are named for Olympians such as Steve Prefontaine. The Adidas archrival has rolled out specialty shoes for all 28
official Olympic sports this year. That’s up from the 11 it designed at the 2004 Athens Games and one-ups Adidas, which is
supplying 27 specialty shoes after steering clear of an equestrian model.

It’s a serious business. Since China is the companies’ most important growth market — more than a billion pairs of feet –
they’re in a neck-and-neck race for dominance. Both want to showcase their footwear technology during the Olympics and
generate brand buzz — even if they don’t end up selling many archery or weight-lifting shoes.

Each company prides itself on its history of inventiveness: Adidas founder Adi Dassler began designing shoes in his family’s
laundry room after World War I, while Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman forged his initial sole designs in his wife’s waffle
iron.

When I first saw these Balmain shoes strutting down the catwalk (because these shoes don’t just trod or even walk, they strut) I was immediately smitten. I read somewhere else they were a bit well, expected amongst all the studded shoes we’ve been seeing lately. But I quickly reverted back - these heels make you look like you have glittering bracelets adorning your tootsies and that’s just something I could never say no to!

You don’t have to look far to find a pair of sparklers for this upcoming party season - Gina have been doing them for yonks, so they should really be your first port of call. These ‘Rox’ heels are £445 but will you make you feel a million bucks so will be worth every cent.

If I were a bride-to-be, the white version of these shoes from Karen Millen would definitely be going right to the top of my shoe shortlist. As I’m not, I guess I’ll have to settle for lusting after the black pair, with their flat bows and diamante trim. On paper it all sounds rather boring, but I think the execution of these is superb, and suddenly £135 doesn’t sound like a huge amount to pay for such a lovely pair of shoes.

The cruise collections have started to hit the stores, and Prada have gone all-out with the sequins for theirs, which includes these peep toe pumps, which are $850 at Saks. Luckily, these will be just at home with a cocktail dress over the upcoming party season as they will be on a cruise or at some exotic resort, and that’s got to be a good thing because for that price you’re going to want to get as much wear out them as possible! Much more mainstream than Prada’s A/W collection, these are the kind of party shoes you’ll have for years, if you need any further justification of that price.

More from the 2008 cruise collections, and I love the pretty simplicity of theseopen-toe wedges by Dolce & Gabbana. We’re told never to mix our metallics, but I think that “rule” is often best ignored, especially where footwear is concerned: the silver and gold leafs on these shoes look perfect together, and are much more striking than a single colour would be. The wedge heel will also make these the kind of party sandals that won’t massacre your feet by the end of the night (hopefully), although the $725 price tag may well cause serious damage to your bank account!

attoos and slingbacks aren’t something I’d generally associate with each other, but I think Gucci have really made them work: the tattoo-style rose on these tan leather shoes is pretty and feminine looking, but with just that little bit of an edge to it, and it all works perfectly. A totally different approach to the old “rose on the toe” approach we’ve seen done to death in the world of shoes in recent years, you can pick up a pair at Saks, where they’re $695.

Even if you’re not keen on florals, I think you’d have to admit that Dolce & Gabbana have come up with a pretty interesting take on the flower-print shoe with these peep toes! Made from white patent leather with the colourful flowers entwined over the foot, these are bright and a little bit funky rather than being overly twee, and although floral prints automatically say “summer” to me, you could always keep them for next year.

These are one of the more expensive pairs of shoes I’ve seen around recently, with a price tag of $1,095, however, so maybe one to add to the Christmas list for now!

Betsey Johnson’s designs are nothing if not “fun”, and these ‘Geri’ pumps are certainly that. From the bright suede uppers to the asymmetric strap, fastened with a giant star, these are shoes that don’t take themselves too seriously, and even the black versions have a slightly mischievous air about them somehow.

A great way to inject a bit of fun into dull outfits, or just to pretend you’re a little girl again, they’re

In shoe-world you’re nobody if you haven’t got a bow somewhere on your anatomy at the moment. This style from Oasis is certainly down with the cool kids because not only is it fully bowed up; it’s sporting the crucial embellishment in a slightly unorthodox central strap position, which is fine as long as you can pull off a youthful girly look! This particular style doesn’t appear to be in Oasis’ actual stores any longer, but you can buy it online at ASOS for£65
